At the start of each session, we gather around the fire circle to enjoy a snack, share news, and talk about the activities available for the day. Forest School is child-led, meaning children have the freedom to choose what they want to engage in. What we do each day depends on the group, the season, and the weather, so there's always something new and exciting to explore.
We offer a variety of activities such as hammocks, ropes, a mud kitchen, digging holes, and building dens. Children also have the opportunity to learn practical skills like whittling, lighting fires, foraging, cooking, tying knots, and much more! Along with games, storytelling, and nature art, the possibilities are endless depending on the needs and interests of the group.
At the end of each session, we come together again to reflect on the day and share ideas for what we'd like to do next week. Observing the children's interests helps us plan future sessions. We also pack up the site together, which teaches a sense of responsibility and teamwork.
We don’t cancel sessions just because it’s wet. We have a large tarpaulin that covers our fire circle, along with smaller tarps for other activities. It’s important for children to experience all types of weather, and with the right clothing, we stay comfortable. When it’s cold, we wear extra layers, including hats, snoods, and gloves, and we have a fire to keep warm. Clothing is key, so we encourage everyone to dress appropriately for the weather. However, if high winds are forecast, we will cancel the session and contact you in advance.
Children should bring water and a snack or lunch, depending on how long they’ll be with us. As we spend time outdoors, the weather can change, so please ensure your child is dressed appropriately. We recommend layering clothing and bringing waterproof trousers and a jacket if it’s wet. Outdoor boots are preferred over wellies, as they provide more warmth and better mobility. Don’t forget to pack a bag with spare clothes, as they’re likely to get dirty!
Forest School is designed to encourage independent learning, so we encourage parents to drop off their children. However, if a child is finding it difficult to be left, we are happy to arrange for a parent to accompany them to Forest School until they feel more comfortable. Our goal is to support each child’s individual needs while fostering independence.
When you book, we ask that you provide detailed information about any allergies or medical conditions your child may have. This information is shared with all staff members working with the children to ensure we can support your child effectively. We also ask that you bring any necessary medications, and we will make sure staff are aware of how to administer them if needed. All of our staff are first aid trained, and we remain vigilant for any signs of reactions, following specific protocols for each child’s needs. Your child’s safety and well-being are our top priority, and we work closely with parents to ensure a smooth and supportive experience.
